The Construction Kit Metaphor for a Software Engineering Design of an E-Learning System
In this paper we propose a construction kit approach that could
be used as an abstract model to implement modular defined
e-learning systems. The metaphor construction kit results from the
math-kit project, that provides students and lecturers with
multimedia support for central topics in undergraduate
mathematics. The lecturers can combine different learning units
into individual courses as easily as bricks of a construction kit
can be used to build a model. Thus, a learning unit which is
developed by one author could be used by a number of other authors
as well. Furthermore, learning objects must be defined independent
of style and format, because the definition of design and style
makes it impossible to integrate them into different
courses. Therefore, we are using XML as the description language
to define learning content in a structural manner. The basis of
our modular concept is based on the Sharable Content Object
Reference Model (SCORM).
